Dower House

Box Tree Cottage

Box Tree

We call it Box Tree Cottage after the ancient, gnarled tree in its garden. Historically this would have been the dower wing - constructed to house aging parents. It is detailed with love and attention, but utterly simple. It connects with the main house internally - allowing access, privacy and communality.

The Main House was extended, most likely in the mid 1700s. This is evidenced through the hand-detailed cantilevered staircase and the panelled doorways.

A beautifully detailed sun-ray pattern in the shutter case, together with decorated architrave and tasselled pilasters indicates attentive workmanship. Original windows throughout the house had been replaced by the time we purchased in 1994. It remains our ardent wish to replace them with sash equivalents.
